Maverick: A Sporty Display Font That Elevates Handmade Product Design

As a web designer who also crafts digital templates for Etsy sellers and small brands, I recently tested Maverick on a range of mockups—from candle labels to digital greeting cards. This display font brings a bold, modern edge to any creative project, and I was genuinely impressed with how it translated across both print and digital mediums.

Maverick for Candle Labels and Product Packaging

One of my first tests was applying Maverick to a candle label design. I needed a font that felt modern yet approachable, something that would stand out on Instagram flat lays and in real-life retail settings. The sporty character of this display font gave the label a youthful, energetic vibe without sacrificing readability. Even when used on a small label, Maverick held up well—especially when paired with a clean sans serif for supporting text like scent descriptions or ingredients.

What stood out was how Maverick's letterforms are bold and distinct without being overly ornate. It’s perfect for brand names, product lines, or taglines on packaging where you want to command attention quickly. Just keep in mind that Maverick is best for short phrases—not for lengthy product details or barcodes.

Maverick for Wedding Invitations and Elegant Branding

I was curious if a sporty font like Maverick could work for more refined projects like wedding stationery. To my surprise, it brought a fresh, modern twist to a rustic-chic bridal suite. Used for the couple’s names and event title, Maverick added a contemporary flair that balanced beautifully with a soft script font for the rest of the text.

It’s a great example of how Maverick pairs well with more delicate styles to create contrast and visual interest. If you're designing a boutique wedding brand or a minimalist bridal collection, Maverick could be the unexpected highlight that sets your work apart.

Maverick for Sticker Sheets and Digital Downloads

I tested Maverick in a sticker sheet design for a planner printable client. The goal was to create a fun, energetic look that would appeal to younger digital crafters. The font’s clean lines and dynamic shapes translated beautifully at small sizes, especially when used for title headers or accent words like “goals,” “to-do,” or “inspo.”

When designing digital downloads, readability across devices is key. Maverick performed well in preview thumbnails and PDF mockups. It’s important to note, though, that while it works for digital, it’s not ideal for dense body text. Use it for headlines, callouts, or decorative elements to keep the design engaging without overwhelming the viewer.

Maverick for Tote Bags and Merchandise Design

Next, I applied Maverick to a boutique tote bag mockup. The font’s sporty edge gave the bag a retro-modern look that felt perfect for a trendy lifestyle brand. It worked especially well in all caps, with a bit of spacing between letters to enhance legibility on fabric.

For small-scale merchandise like mugs, shirts, or enamel pins, Maverick is an excellent choice for names, slogans, or logos. Just be sure to test the font in your cutting software—especially if you're using it for Cricut or Silhouette projects. The font’s unique shapes can sometimes require minor adjustments in spacing or alignment for clean cuts.

What to Know Before Using Maverick in Your Shop

Before you start using Maverick in your shop listings or printables, check the font’s license to ensure it’s approved for commercial use. Most modern display fonts come with clear licensing, but it's always better to double-check, especially if you're bundling the font with templates or digital assets.

Also, take a look at the font family to see what styles are included. Maverick may offer alternates, ligatures, or swashes that can add extra flair to your designs. And while it’s a display font best used for headlines or short text, it pairs beautifully with simpler fonts for a balanced, professional look across all your branding materials.
